It was constructed in the year 1780 by the Maratha monarch, Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of the Indore.
The temple stands on the western bank of the holy River Ganga, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest of Shiva temples. The main deity is known by the name Vishvanatha or Vishveshvara meaning Ruler of The Universe.
Mangla aarti is important because it is first aarti in the morning. The Scriptures talk of the “Brahma muhurta” hour. It means one hour and a half before the sun comes up. This time is very auspicious because the sun is pushing all of the energies of the Earth from a sleeping stage to an awakened stage. Similarly, it is pushing the mind, the intelligence, and the bodies of all the living entities from a sleeping stage to a higher stage of awakening. Therefore, mangla aarti is calculated to be at that time, and if we give our attention and energy towards glorifying the Lord, it is very beneficial and auspicious to begin the day hearing and chanting about the glories of the Lord.
Every noon, Bhog Aarti is performed in Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is second Aarti after Mangla Aarti. Bhog Aarti is offering of food to Lord who gives this food to us. After offering, food is distributed among all present devotees as Prasad.
The Sapta Rishi Aarti is an ancient ritual dating back to more than 750 years. The seven Shastri/Pandit/Purohit each belonging to a different Gotra perform the Aarti simultaneously. It is believed that every evening, the Saptarishis (the seven great sages) come to perform Aarti to the deity, and hence this puja is conducted every evening at 7 pm.
Every Evening, Shringar Bhog Aarti is performed in Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is fourth Aarti of the day after Sapta Rishi Aarti. Shringar Bhog Aarti is offering of food to Lord who gives this food to us. After offering, food is distributed among all present devotees as Prasad.
Rudra is a famous name of Lord Shiva. The essence of this puja is the holy chant of Sri Rudram from the Yajur Veda and giving a holy bath to Shivling with many materials including Panchamrit. This is one of the most powerful forms of worships in Hinduism and is believed to bless the devotees with prosperity and peace and remove the sins of many births. Shiva is a highly benevolent God and is easily pleased.
